Updated December 13, 2024
When was Fitwel v3 originally launched?
Fitwel v3 was launched globally on June 4, 2024, after a successful pilot phase with select users starting in December 2023.
What are the key improvements that are included as part of v3, launched in June 2024?
We regularly evolve the Fitwel Standard to ensure it reflects the most recent research and evidence, is responsive to input and insights from our users, and is optimized for resiliency, impact, and value. The new version reflects the latest research and evidence linking health and the built environment and gives users every opportunity to design and operate their assets to promote people’s health, and in turn, maximize value.
Here are some highlights launched in June 2024:
- New Evidence-based Strategies: New health-promoting strategies based on an expanded evidence base
- Streamlined Documentation Process: Streamlined and more efficient documentation process to improve project submissions.
- Clarified Language and Guidance: Content alignment and clarity to guide project teams on strategy compliance and documentation.
- Streamlined Process for Portfolio-Wide Implementation: Strategy alignment across scorecards allows users to streamline strategy implementation across their portfolio.
- Expanded Applicability: Improved scorecard solutions for multi-tenant buildings that expand and optimize the impact of Fitwel’s health-promoting strategies.
- New Tech Enhancements and Features: Expanded access to the digital platform, enhancements to client response functions, and opportunities for performance assessments.
Why were the v3 revisions made and released in December 2024, before the platform changes go live in January 2025?
The v3 revisions reflect the feedback and insights of our users, ensuring Fitwel continues to meet your needs with clarity, applicability and impact. Its not a new standard, just an improved v3 that includes:
- Streamlined Processes: Easier certification and recertification pathways.
- Expanded Applicability: Greater flexibility across asset types and locations.
- Enhanced Tools: Resources to help you maximize your project's impact.
We released the revised resources in December to give users early access to the updates, so you can start working with them immediately, even if the platform updates won’t be fully live until January.
If you’ve already started working with the current platform version or offline v3 resources:
- You don’t need to start over.
- Your progress is fully supported, and we’ll ensure a smooth transition as the platform updates go live.
This phased rollout underscores our commitment to supporting your projects and delivering the tools you need, when you need them, to achieve Fitwel certification with confidence.
Are these December 2024 v3 revisions big updates or minor revisions?
These revisions focus on expanding pathways and clarifying requirements, making the certification process more flexible—not more stringent. Our goal is to keep you moving forward, maximizing impact while saving you time.
While the platform integrates these revisions (review key dates here) you can still assess your project and gather documentation using the updated resources (change logs and checklists). For example, on the revised Single Tenant (ST) v3 scorecard, the majority of strategies (63-70%) remain unchanged or require no additional documentation for compliance.
Should I wait for the platform updates in January to start my project?
No, there’s no need to wait. If you’re already working on a project using the current platform resources:
- You can continue your work without starting over.
- The updated v3 resources are compatible and designed to streamline your process.
- Once the January changes go live, any additional features or efficiencies can easily integrate into your project workflow.
For new projects, we encourage using the updated resources now to maximize alignment with the upcoming platform updates.
Can I still certify projects under v2.1?
No, new registrations for Fitwel v2.1 closed as of July 15, 2024. However:
- Previously registered v2.1 projects: Certification can proceed under the v2.1 standard within the three-year timeline from registration.
- Recertifications: Built Certified projects that initiate recertification after July 15, 2024, must use the v3 standard.
How does v3 impact recertification?
Certified projects must recertify under the latest standard available at the time of recertification. For example:
- v2.1 Built Pathway projects: Recertifications initiated after July 15, 2024, use v3.
- v2.1 Design Pathway projects: These can be recertified under v2.1 Built Pathway or upgraded to v3, depending on project needs.
- Coming soon - Recertification guidance! Stay tuned for additional guidance on our crosswalk resources coming in early 2025 to help facilitate your transition from v2.1 to v3.
Can I upgrade my registered v2.1 project to v3?
Yes, projects can request a scorecard upgrade to v3. Note:
- Upgrading takes up to two weeks.
- Information on the previous scorecard must be saved before the upgrade, as data will be reset during the process.

What if I have a valid 2023-2024 Viral Response Module?
Earlier this year, we announced that all accounts with a valid v2022-2023 Viral Response Module (VRM) certification, including any associated Viral Response Approved (VRA) assets, will automatically receive an extension through December 31, 2024, at no additional charge. This extension supports 2025 reporting.
Additionally, VRA assets provide a pathway to full v2.1 asset certification by carrying over applicable strategy approvals. If you have any VRA assets and wish to pursue full v2.1 asset certification, you must register and pay certification fees by July 15, 2024, at 11:59 PM ET, either by credit card or invoice. Failure to do so by this date will forfeit applicable platform efficiencies from VRAs to full asset certification.
However, if no action is taken towards v2.1 asset certification, the VRM and VRAs will still remain valid through December 31, 2024.
Is there a cost difference between v2.1 and v3?
No, certification fees will remain consistent between standard versions v2.1 and v3. Please take note that we previously announced new pricing effective April 2024.
How long do I have before I’m required to certify my project after registering on the Fitwel Platform?
A project has up to three years to submit for certification once registered and certification fees have been paid.
When does a project’s 3-Year certification validity period begin?
Fitwel Certification is valid for three years from the date the certification is awarded.
Recertification can be initiated at any time on the Fitwel Platform within the three years from the date of the initial certification award. Projects that do not submit for recertification within one year from the expiration date will be required to resubmit their project as an initial certification, and will not benefit from recertification efficiencies or discounts on the Fitwel platform.
How does v3 affect the Fitwel Ambassador Program? Will I need to renew my credential?
An individual’s Fitwel Ambassador credential is valid in perpetuity, regardless of the version under which the credential is awarded. Ambassadors will not need to renew their credentials for v3. The Ambassador Course is introductory level and primarily focuses on the development of Fitwel, how Fitwel is applied to projects, and the growing health and business imperatives driving demand for health-promoting real estate. The multiple choice exam will be updated to include v3-relevant questions to merge newer strategies and current concepts within Fitwel.
