Why recertify a project?
Recertification ensures that your project stays up to date with the latest research supporting health in the built environment, provides accurate data for reporting purposes, and provides evidence-based strategies for projects’ decision-making.
Projects that initiate recertification on time not only maintain their commitment to occupant health and wellbeing, but also take advantage of efficiencies that make the recertification process seamless. The Fitwel platform will automatically award credit for select strategies, and carry over documentation that was previously approved during the initial certification to the current recertification submission, reducing user workload and streamlining the process.
For a snapshot of what the transition from v2.1 to v3.0 looks like, please see our downloadable crosswalks here.
When should I recertify my project?
Fitwel Certification is valid for up to 3 years. Projects can initiate recertification on the Fitwel platform at any time following the initial certification.
However, to maintain your project’s Fitwel Certification without lapse, project teams should plan to initiate Recertification and submit the project at least 12-16 weeks prior to the project’s expiration date. Projects that follow this timeline benefit from receiving 20% off current fees and a consistent certification date, making planning and budgeting easier for clients.
* Note 1: This timeline reflects a 3-year cycle certification to ensure projects maintain their Fitwel status without lapse between certifications.** Note 2: The Recertification Process follows the same review process as first-time submisison. For a snapshot of the review process and its different phases, please see our Help Center article here.*** Note 3: The Recertification Process will start on the date Registration and Certification fee payments are received and the Scorecard is submitted on the platform, whichever is the latest.
For projects that wish to be recertified within a specific calendar year, please also keep in mind our yearly Submission Deadlines, which are available for reference in our Help Center article here.
Under which version will I recertify my project?
Design Certification to Built Recertification:
Projects that achieved Design certification previously can choose to recertify as Built either under the same scorecard version as previously certified* OR under the current Fitwel version.
Example: A project previously certified under Fitwel v2.1 Design that is now fully built, operational, and occupied may choose to recertify either under v2.1 Built OR under the current Fitwel v3.0 Built.
* If you wish to follow this recertification pathway, please contact us directly to request your project is recertified under the same scorecard version as previously certified. On the platform, the project will automatically be directed to recertify under the current Fitwel version.
Built Certification to Built Recertification:
Projects that achieved Built certification previously must recertify as Built under the current Fitwel version, and will automatically be directed on the Fitwel platform to do so.
Example: A project previously certified under Fitwel v2.1 Built will recertify under v3.0 Built.
How do I initiate Recertification on the Fitwel platform?
You can initiate recertification on the Platform at any time following the initial certification by selecting Begin Recertification on the project page, and paying the $500 registration fees.

*The recertification process follows the same phases as the typical Fitwel certification process (Initial Review, Client Response, and Final Review). For more info about the full Fitwel certification process, please refer to our article here.
How much does Recertification cost?
Like the initial certification process, recertification also requires payment of both the registration and certification fees.
