Establish and implement a tobacco- and smoke-free policy for all outdoor spaces
Rationale: Developing and implementing a policy that prohibits all forms of tobacco use in outdoor spaces lowers smoking and tobacco consumption, supporting improved air quality and reducing exposure to secondhand smoke, contributing to reduced risk of cardiac and pulmonary conditions for both tobacco users and other occupants.
For the most accurate strategy and documentation requirements, please refer to the digital scorecard made available on the Fitwel Platform.
Requirements
Demonstrate compliance with one of the options below:
Option 1 - Tobacco-Free Outdoor Areas (Full Credit):
Demonstrate compliance with all the following requirements:
Low-Rise Residential with shared interior spaces (LR+), Low-Rise Residential with no shared interior spaces (LR)
Establish a tobacco- and smoke-free policy that applies to all outdoor areas within the project.
Outdoor areas include rooftops and outdoor parking areas.
Ensure that the policy includes language that clearly prohibits the use of all forms of smoking, tobacco, and unregulated nicotine products, including:
- cigarettes, cigars (commercially or self-rolled)
- pipes, hookahs, water pipes
- Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), including e-cigarettes, vaporizers, and all tobacco-free ENDS devices
- smokeless tobacco (e.g., snuff, snus, chew)
- tobacco use including smoking, chewing, dipping, or any other use of tobacco products.
Note: Nicotine gum, patches, lozenges, prescription inhalers, and prescription nasal spray are not considered unregulated nicotine products and permitting their use does not disqualify this strategy.
- Prohibit the inclusion of designated areas for smoking or tobacco use within the project.
Option 2 - Smoke-Free Outdoor Areas (Partial Credit):
The project may achieve partial credit by demonstrating compliance with all of the following requirements:
Low-Rise Residential with shared interior spaces (LR+), Low-Rise Residential with no shared interior spaces (LR)
Establish a smoke-free policy that applies to all outdoor areas within the project.
Outdoor areas include rooftops and outdoor parking areas.
