Definition of projects as part of a campus
Fitwel considers part of a campus a group of single buildings that operate as individual workplace properties and are physically separated, but are related and located adjacent to each other. Projects seeking recognition as a Fitwel-certified campus should register and certify each adjacent building under separate scorecards to pursue the Fitwel certification and select ‘Part of a Campus’ when registering each project on the Fitwel platform.
Note 1: Multiple buildings located on the same campus may pursue Fitwel certification either simultaneously or during separate phases.
Note 2: Even if a project is identified as part of a campus, it is not required that all other buildings located on campus pursue the Fitwel certification.
How can I register projects as part of a campus?
Each building must select one scorecard, meaning that each will have an individual project registration and submission.
- When registering each project, select “Yes” for ‘Part of a Campus’ designation on the Project Information page.
- By selecting this option, some strategies will show additional requirements on the platform, which are only applicable to Campus projects.
- For example, Strategy 2.3 Bicycle Parking: while regular projects must provide the amenity either within the building or within 300 feet (100 meters) from the project main building entrance, projects that confirm being a part of a campus may provide the amenity within ¼ mile (400 meters) from the project main building entrance.
- For example, Strategy 3.8 Tobacco- and Smoke-free Outdoor Spaces: while regular projects are required to confirm that tobacco and smoking are prohibited within the building and site, projects that confirm being a part of a campus must also “confirm that the campus does not include a designated smoking area on-site.”
- Projects that have not selected the ‘Part of a Campus’ designation on the Project Information page will not be considered part of a campus by reviewers for any of the relevant strategies.
How will my project be reviewed?
Each building located on campus is treated separately and must demonstrate compliance with the requirements of each strategy being pursued.
Which documentation should I include in the submission for review?
Attachments in the Project Information page and/or Relevant Strategies
- Master plan/map showing the project building and the other buildings located on campus, with relevant annotations about amenities shared among buildings if applicable.
- Relevant information for each building on campus (e.g., building name/number and the number of Regular Occupants, if relevant, whose primary workspaces are located in that building).
Policies, Protocols, and Plans
- In general, policies, protocols, and plans may be applicable to the entire campus. However, if the document includes the individual name/number of the buildings, ensure the relevant project pursuing certification is also included.
Maps, Floor Plans, and Sections
- For strategies that allow amenities to be either located “within the project" -or- “within X distance from the main building entrance”, the project pursuing certification may receive credit for amenities located within a neighboring building on the campus.
- Applicable strategies include: Workplace 8.7 Multi-Purpose Room, MFR 8.3 Dedicated Exercise Room, or MFR 8.5 Kitchen Facility.
- For strategies where the requirements state "Include X within the project" only; the amenity/feature must be located within the building pursuing certification, not within another building on the same campus.
- Applicable to strategies include: Workplace 8.3 Common Break Area, 8.5 Quiet Room, 8.6 Lactation Station/Room, etc., and other features like Stairs and Entrances.
Surveys
- If the survey was fielded campus-wide, the project must identify the response rate for the project pursuing certification only (i.e., confirm how many regular occupants of the project pursuing certification responded to the survey conducted).
Calculations
- Amenities that are accessible to other occupants on campus must include all occupants with access in the relevant calculations to show that the project meets demand.
- Applicable strategies include Workplace 2.3 Bicycle Parking Spaces, 2.4 Showers and Lockers; and Workplace 3.6/MFR 3.9 Fruit and Vegetable Garden).
- For calculations of “Access to Natural Daylight” or “Access to Views of Nature”, which are building-specific, only relevant spaces located within the project pursuing certification must be included. Common spaces located within neighboring buildings on the campus should not be considered in the calculations.
