Provide tobacco- and smoke-free signage at all entrances and outdoor areas
Rationale: Clear and permanent signage prohibiting the use of tobacco discourages smoking and tobacco use, supporting increased compliance with policies and decreased exposure to second-hand smoke, contributing to reduced risk of cardiac and pulmonary conditions for both tobacco users and other occupants.
Requirements
Demonstrate compliance with one of the options below:
Option 1 - Tobacco-Free Signage (Full Credit):
Include signage that meets all of the following:
- Include permanent signage that includes icons and/or language that clearly prohibit smoking and the use of all tobacco products on-site.
- Ensure signage is mounted permanently on structures such as walls, doors, poles, or stands.
- Locate signage visible to pedestrians at all of the following locations:
- all shared building entrances, including main and side entrances
- all pedestrian entrances into the building(s) from parking areas
- all designated outdoor space amenities (such as parks, plazas, gardens, outdoor fitness areas, or walking trails)
- all outdoor parking areas and garages.
Note that buildings that include signage indicating that tobacco use and smoking are prohibited within a specific distance from building entrances, vents and/or windows must demonstrate that the area within that distance is not located within the building site.
