Establish and implement a tobacco- and smoke-free policy for all indoor areas
Rationale: Developing and implementing a policy that prohibits all forms of tobacco use decreases smoking and tobacco consumption, supporting improved indoor air quality and reducing exposure to secondhand smoke — contributing to a reduced risk of cardiac and pulmonary conditions for both tobacco users and other occupants.
Requirements
Demonstrate compliance with one of the options below:
Option 1 - Tobacco-Free Indoor Areas (Full Credit):
To achieve full credit, demonstrate compliance with all of the following requirements:
- Establish a tobacco and smoke-free policy that applies to all indoor areas within the building, including dwelling units.
- Ensure that the policy includes language that clearly prohibits the use of all forms of smoking, tobacco, and unregulated nicotine products, including:
- cigarettes, cigars (commercially- or self-rolled)
- pipes, hookahs, water pipes
- electronic cigarettes
- smokeless tobacco (such as snuff, snus, chew/dip)
- tobacco use including smoking, chewing, dipping, or any other use of tobacco products.
- Ensure the policy prohibits the inclusion of designated smoking areas within the building.
Option 2 - Smoke-Free Indoor Areas (Partial Credit):
The project may achieve partial credit by demonstrating compliance with the following requirements:
- Establish a smoke-free policy that applies to all indoor areas within the project.
Indoor areas include dwelling units.
- Ensure that the policy includes language that clearly prohibits the use of all forms of smoking, including:
- cigarettes, cigars (commercially- or self-rolled)
- pipes, hookahs, water pipes
- electronic cigarettes.
- Ensure the policy prohibits the inclusion of designated smoking areas within the building.
