Establish and implement a construction safety policy

Rationale: Construction safety practices reduce exposure to harmful chemicals, physical hazards, and noise pollution, supporting quality of sleep and cognitive function and reducing risk of injury and chronic respiratory disease for occupants, employees, and the surrounding community.

For the most accurate strategy and documentation requirements, please refer to the digital scorecard made available on the Fitwel Platform.

Requirements

Demonstrate compliance with one of the options below:

Option 1: Construction Safety Policy - (Full Credit):

To achieve full credit, demonstrate compliance with all of the following requirements:

Multi-Tenant Whole Building (no on-site management), Multi-Tenant Whole Building (with on-site management)

1. Implement a Construction Safety Policy that is at least as rigorous as the Fitwel Construction Safety Policy.
2. Ensure the construction safety policy applies to any construction, major renovations, and public space improvements during all phases of construction and renovations as outlined in Section 2 of the Construction Safety Policy.
3. Ensure that construction project managers implement all safety practices as outlined in Section 3 of the Construction Safety Policy.
4. Implement a community impact assessment for all construction, major renovations, and public space improvements within the project as outlined in the requirements of Section 4 of the Construction Safety Policy.
5. Share the policy with all tenants through a minimum of one of the following methods: 
   1. relevant leases or a tenant manual
   2. a digital platform, such as a website, digital application, or display screen in common areas
   3. communication material, such as notification emails or newsletters.

Single-Tenant, Commercial Interior

1. Implement a Construction Safety Policy that is at least as rigorous as the Fitwel Construction Safety Policy.
2. Ensure the construction safety policy applies to any construction, major renovations, and public space improvements during all phases of construction and renovations as outlined in Section 2 of the Construction Safety Policy.
3. Ensure that construction project managers implement all safety practices as outlined in Section 3 of the Construction Safety Policy.
4. Implement a community impact assessment for all construction, major renovations, and public space improvements within the project as outlined in the requirements of Section 4 of the Construction Safety Policy.

Option 2: Equivalent Standard - (Full Credit):

To achieve full credit, demonstrate compliance with all of the following requirements:

Multi-Tenant Whole Building, Multi-Tenant Whole Building+

1. Achieve credit for the following equivalent standards:
   • Considerate Constructors Scheme
     - score of 25 points (at least 5 points per section)

Single-Tenant, Commercial Interior

1. Achieve credit for the following equivalent standards:
   • Considerate Constructors Scheme
     - score of 25 points (at least 5 points per section)

Design Pathway

Option 1:

• Upload an annotated official copy of the construction safety policy
• Checkbox to certify that the construction safety policy applies to any construction, major renovations, and public space improvements during all phases of construction and renovations
• Checkbox to certify that construction project managers have implemented the listed following safety practices 
• Checkbox to certify that a community impact assessment for all construction, major renovations, and public space improvements within the project is implemented as outlined in the requirements of Section 3 of the Construction Safety Policy
• Checkbox to certify that the construction safety policy is shared with all tenants through the following:
  • a digital platform, such as a website, digital application, or display screen in common areas
  • communication material, such as notification emails or newsletters
  • relevant leases or a tenant manual
  • Not Applicable: this is a single tenant site

Option 2:

• Upload receipt showing that the qualifying equivalent standard has been achieved
