Active a pedestrian area with a publicly accessible space
Rationale: Locating a publicly accessible space within sight of a pedestrian area connects a project to the surroundings and provides opportunities for congregation, supporting community engagement, perceptions of safety, and physical activity.
Requirements
Requirement Guidance: Each building pursuing this strategy must meet the below requirements to be awarded credit. Buildings within the project that do not meet the requirements will not achieve credit for this strategy.
A combination of multiple publicly accessible spaces may be used to comply with the requirements for multiple buildings. |
Demonstrate compliance with one of the options below:
Option 1 - Publicly Accessible Space and Pedestrian Area (Full Credit):
Demonstrate compliance with all of the following requirements:
Multi-Tenant Base Building (no on-site management), Multi-Tenant Base Building (with on-site management)
- Provide a minimum of one of the following publicly accessible spaces:
- commercial space, such as a retail or dining facility
- public service space such as a library, post office, public transit station, or bank
- publicly accessible amenity space, such as a fitness facility.
Municipal transit stops may be used to meet this strategy.
- Ensure that the space is open to the general public.
- Orient the publicly accessible space to egress onto one of the following qualifying pedestrian areas:
- sidewalks
- footpaths
- plazas
- gardens
- car-free zones
- shared streets
- public transit stations or hubs
- publicly accessible lobby
- publicly accessible atriums or skywalk bridges.
- Locate the publicly accessible space on the main building entrance floor of the building or within another building on-site within a 1/4-mile or 400-meter walking route of each building pursuing credit.
Single-Tenant, Commercial Interior
- Provide a minimum of one of the following publicly accessible spaces:
- commercial space, such as a retail or dining facility
- public service space such as a library, post office, public transit station, or bank
- publicly accessible amenity space, such as a fitness facility.
