11. Operations & Maintenance - Safe Chemical Storage

Provide separate ventilation in all areas with chemical use or storage

Rationale: Ensuring that chemical products are either third-party verified as safe, or that their storage areas are properly ventilated, reduces the risk of exposure to airborne toxins and potential resultant symptoms, including wheezing, asthma, allergic reactions, and skin irritation.

Requirements

Demonstrate compliance with one of the options below:

Option 1 - Qualifying Standards (Full Credit):

Demonstrate compliance with the following requirement:

Low-Rise Residential with shared interior spaces (LR+)

1. Ensure all chemicals used and/or stored on-site meet one of the following qualifying standards: 

   • Green Seal
   • California Code of Regulations
   • Ecologo
   • EPA Safer Choice

   • ISO 14024-compliant (Type 1) Ecolabel.

     Areas of chemical use and storage include but are not limited to the following:

     • storage rooms
     • copy/print rooms, where output exceeds 40,000 pages or 20,000 pages double
       sided per month
     • art rooms
     • laboratories
     • workshops
     • janitor's closets
     • garages.

    

Option 2 - Safe Storage (Full Credit):

Demonstrate compliance with the following requirement:

Low-Rise Residential with shared interior spaces (LR+)

1. Ensure that all chemicals used or stored on-site which do not meet one of the following qualifying standards are stored in a space that is ventilated separately:
   • Green Seal
   • California Code of Regulations
   • Ecologo
   • EPA Safer Choice

   • ISO 14024-compliant (Type 1) Ecolabel.

     Areas of chemical use and storage include but are not limited to the following:

     • storage rooms
     • copy/print rooms, where output exceeds 40,000 pages or 20,000 pages double
       sided per month
     • art rooms
     • laboratories
     • workshops
     • janitor's closets
     • garages.

Option 1:

  • Upload a document showing the qualifying standards of the chemicals used and stored on-site.        

Option 2: 

• Requirement 1:
  • Checkbox to certify that all chemicals on-site which do not meet one of the qualifying standards will be stored in a separately ventilated space.      
  • Upload an annotated design drawing(s) identifying how the identified spaces will be ventilated separately.
