Provide evenly distributed lighting in all outdoor areas
Rationale: Pedestrian-scale lighting designed to eliminate shadows improves ability to navigate and improves ability to see figures at night, contributing to increased perceptions of safety, reduced crime, and diminished stress levels.
For the most accurate strategy and documentation requirements, please refer to the digital scorecard made available on the Fitwel Platform.
Requirements
Demonstrate compliance with the option below:
Distributed Outdoor Lighting (Full Credit):
Demonstrate compliance with all the following requirements:
Low-Rise Residential with shared interior spaces (LR+), Low-Rise Residential with no shared interior spaces (LR)
Install exterior sourced lighting that allows for even illumination in all of the following outdoor areas on-site:
- pathways
- outdoor spaces
- bicycle paths
- outdoor parking areas
- all main building entrances
- all side building entrances
- pedestrian entrances from parking areas
- transit or shuttle stops.
- entrances to breezeways or shared outdoor stairs leading to residential units
- outdoor areas on-site
Outdoor lighting that uses motion sensors are eligible to qualify for credit.
- Ensure that lighting is pedestrian scale and improves visibility and improves perceptions of safety through the following:
- minimize glare by utilizing glare-free light fixtures/luminaires on outdoor lights to improve visibility for pedestrians
- minimize glare by ensuring outdoor light fixtures/luminaires are fully shielded such that no light emits at or above 90 degrees
- install lighting that is specifically designed for pedestrian areas
- ensure consistent lighting along all pedestrian paths, including access routes to entrances of breezeways, shared outdoor stairs leading to residential units, and other outdoor areas on-site
Compliance Documentation
Design Pathway (LR+, LR)
- Requirement 1:
- Upload annotated lighting plans identifying all outdoor areas on-site.
