Provide occupants access to dedicated bicycle parking
Rationale: Dedicated bicycle parking that is secure and covered encourages the use of bicycles for transportation and recreation and reduces reliance on automobiles, contributing to reduced risk of chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes, as well as improved air quality resulting from fewer automobiles being on the road.
For the most accurate strategy and documentation requirements, please refer to the digital scorecard made available on the Fitwel Platform.
Requirements
Requirement Guidance
For buildings with multiple entrances, identify a main building entrance that is used to access a common area within the building such as a lobby, reception area, or main circulation pathway.
Demonstrate compliance with one of the options below:
Option 1 - Dedicated Bicycle Parking (Full Credit):
Demonstrate compliance with all the following requirements:
Low-Rise Residential with shared interior spaces (LR+), Low-Rise Residential with no shared interior spaces (LR)
Provide bicycle parking that is free of charge and is exclusively accessible to residential occupants.
Municipal or publicly accessible bicycle parking areas do not qualify for the strategy.
- Ensure that the bicycle parking is covered from the elements and includes features that allows for bicycles to be locked.
- Locate the bicycle parking area(s) either within a building or within a 1/4-mile or 400-meter walking route of a main building entrance(s) of each building.
- Provide a minimum of one bicycle parking space for every three dwelling units within the project.
Option 2 - Dedicated Bicycle Parking within Residential Units (Full Credit):
Demonstrate compliance with all the following requirements:
Low-Rise Residential with shared interior spaces (LR+), Low-Rise Residential with no shared interior spaces (LR)
- Ensure residents are permitted to park bicycles within residential units free of charge.
- Publicize that bicycle parking is permitted within residential units to all residents within the project through one of the following:
- resident lease agreements
- official resident communications, such as notification emails or website
- signage in common areas or outside of residential buildings.
Compliance Documentation
Design Pathway (LR+, LR)
Option 1:
- Requirement 1:
- Checkbox to certify that the bicycle parking will be free of charge and exclusively accessible to residential occupants.
- Requirement 2:
- Upload an annotated design drawing or photograph showing the bicycle parking.
- Requirement 3:
- Upload one of the following:
- an annotated plan showing the planned location of the bicycle parking area(s) within a building
- an annotated map showing the distance between the planned location of the bicycle parking area(s) and a main building entrance of the furthest building within the required distance.
- Upload one of the following:
- Requirement 4:
- Text box to input the number of bicycle parking spaces that will be provided.
- Text box to input the number of dwelling units within the project.
Option 2:
- Requirement 1:
- Checkbox to certify that residents will be permitted to park bicycles within residential units free of charge.
- Requirement 2:
- Checkbox to certify that residents are informed bicycle parking is permitted within residential units through the following methods (select all that apply):
- resident lease agreements
- official resident communications, such as notification emails or website
- signage in common areas or outside of residential buildings.
- Upload a copy of the materials that will be shared with residents clearly stating that bicycle parking is permitted within the residential units.
