Connect the project to community destinations

Rationale: Connectivity to surrounding community destinations increases awareness and accessibility of local assets, such as museums, parks, and restaurants, which encourages walking and is associated with lower levels of psychological distress, contributing to reduced risk of obesity and anxiety.

Requirements

Demonstrate compliance with one of the options below:

Option 1 - Community Destinations Connection (Full Credit):

Demonstrate compliance with all the following requirements:

Low-Rise Residential with shared interior spaces (LR+), Low-Rise Residential with no shared interior spaces (LR)

1. Connect the project to three of the following qualifying community destinations:
   • area of commerce (such as a retail corridor or market)
   • food outlet (such as, a cafe, restaurant, food court, deli, or grocery store)
   • civic and/or institutional building (such as a library, school, community center, or postal facility)
   • commercial building (such as an office building or other place of employment)
   • public outdoor open space (such as a park, plaza, pedestrian corridor, or other type of public open space)
   • cultural destination (such as a religious center, museum, or other type of cultural center)
   • medical facility (such as a doctor's office, surgical center, urgent care facility, hospital, or general medical center)

   • financial service (such as a bank, ATM, or cash machine).

     
     Amenities and community destinations must be located outside the building submitting for certification.

2. Ensure that the community destinations are connected to the project through one of the following:
   • community destinations are located within the project
   • community destinations are located within a 1/2-mile or 800-meter walking distance of a main building entrance of each building
   • community destinations are accessible through public transit or a dedicated shuttle service that is open to all building occupants.

Option 2 - Nearby Community Destinations (Partial Credit):

The project may achieve partial credit by demonstrating that each building is connected to community destinations that meet all of the following requirements:

Low-Rise Residential with shared interior spaces (LR+), Low-Rise Residential with no shared interior spaces (LR)

1. Inform occupants of nearby community destinations by identifying a minimum of three of the following qualifying community destinations located within 5 miles or 8 meters of the project:
   • area of commerce (such as a retail corridor or market)
   • food outlet (such as, a cafe, restaurant, food court, deli, or grocery store)
   • civic and/or institutional building (such as a library, school, community center, or postal facility)
   • commercial building (such as an office building or other place of employment)
   • public outdoor open space (such as a park, plaza, pedestrian corridor, or other type of public open space)
   • cultural destination (such as a religious center, museum, or other type of cultural center)
   • medical facility (such as a doctor's office, surgical center, urgent care facility, hospital, or general medical center)
   • financial service (such as a bank, ATM, or cash machine).
2. Ensure the qualifying community destinations are accessible through public transit or a shuttle service that is located within a 1/2-mile or 800-meter walking route of:
   • a main building entrance of each building

   • each community destination.

     Amenities and community destinations must be located outside of the building submitting for certification.

3. Share the location of community destinations with all residents within the project through one of the following:
   • digital communication, such as a website or digital application
   • on-site displays, such as posters or display screens.

Design Pathway (LR+, LR)

Option 1: 

• Requirement 1:
  • Checkbox to select the below community destinations that will be connected to the project (minimum three):
    • areas of commerce (such as a retail corridor or market)
    • food outlet (such as a cafe, restaurant, food court, deli, or grocery store)
    • civic and/or institutional building (such as a library, school, community center, or postal facility)
    • commercial building (such as an office building or other place of employment)
    • public outdoor open space (such as a park, plaza, pedestrian corridor, or other types of public open space)   
    • cultural destination (such as a religious center, museum, or other type of cultural center)
    • medical facility (such as a doctor's office, surgical center, urgent care facility, hospital, or general medical center)
    • financial service (such as a bank, ATM, or cash machine).
• Requirement 2:
  • Upload an annotated map showing one of the following:
    • the planned location of the qualifying community destination within the project
    • the existing or planned transit or shuttle route
    • the distance between the community destinations and a main building entrance of the furthest building within the required distance

Option 2: 

• Requirement 1:
  • Upload an annotated map identifying the distance between a main building entrance of the furthest building and each required community destination.
  • Checkbox to certify that each building will be within 5 miles or 8 kilometers of the following community destinations (three minimum):
    • areas of commerce (such as a retail corridor or market)
    • food outlet (such as a cafe, restaurant, food court, deli, or grocery store)
    • civic and/or institutional building (such as a library, school, community center, or postal facility)
    • commercial building (such as an office building or other place of employment)
    • public outdoor open space (such as a park, plaza, pedestrian corridor, or other types of public open space)   
    • cultural destination (such as a religious center, museum, or other type of cultural center)
    • medical facility (such as a doctor's office, surgical center, urgent care facility, hospital, or general medical center)
    • financial service (such as a bank, ATM, or cash machine).
• Requirement 2:
  • Upload an annotated map identifying the distance between:
    • the transit stop and a main building entrance of the furthest building.
    • the transit stop and each required community destination.
• Requirement 3:
  • Checkbox to confirm the method(s) used to inform all residents within the project of the location of community destinations (select all that apply):
    • digital communication, such as a website or digital application
    • on-site displays, such as posters or display screens
  • Upload a copy of the nearby community destinations informational materials that will be shared with all residents.
