Operable shading increases the ability for occupants to control their own workplace, contributing to increased comfort and enhanced mental health.

Key Terms

• Operable Shading refers to manual blinds, curtains, or other coverings on a window that allow regular occupants to control the amount of sunlight reaching an interior space.

Strategy Insights

• Smart technology and architectural devices that allow for windows to automatically shade only qualify if regular occupants have the ability to fully control them. 
• Lobby levels may be excluded from the documentation, even if there are security personnel or receptionists located in those lobby levels.

Documentation Guidance 

• Ensure the photographs represent spaces indicated in other strategies (such as views of nature from workstations, access to natural daylight, active workstations, etc.) as the regularly occupied workspaces.
