Activate an underutilized open space with programming
Rationale: A temporary placemaking plan that activates underutilized space and provides regular event programming fosters social interaction and increases opportunities for physical activity, contributing to enhanced social capital, perceived happiness, and empowerment — as well as diminished risk of diseases related to sedentary lifestyles, such as a cardiovascular disease and obesity.
Requirements
Demonstrate compliance with the below:
Temporary Placemaking Plan (Full Credit):
Demonstrate compliance with all of the following requirements:
- Implement a temporary placemaking plan to activate an underutilized or under-built space within the project.
Qualifying underutilized or under-built spaces may include but are not limited to:
- parking areas or lots that are vacant during certain hours of the day
- private streets that are not utilized during certain hours of the day
- unoccupied buildings
- seasonally used spaces during off-season (such as an ice rink or swimming pool).
- Offer a minimum of one qualifying program each month within the underutilized or under-built space.
Qualifying programs may include but are not limited to:
- community events (such as game nights, clothing drives, and volunteer days)
- commercial events (such as hosting markets, food trucks, food stalls, and other food events)
- cultural events or installations (such as concerts, festivals, temporary art, and movie nights).
Note that seasonally used spaces may show the qualifying monthly programs during off-season.
- Outline a programming schedule that:
- identifies the underutilized space on-site
- identifies the duration the space will be underutilized within a year
- outlines monthly events during the period when the space is underutilized.
