Install mold-resistant materials in bathrooms and kitchens
Rationale: Installing materials that prevent moisture buildup and mold growth lowers the risk of associated indoor air quality issues for occupants, contributing to a reduced risk of conditions such as asthma, allergic reactions, skin and respiratory infections, and fatigue.
Requirements
Demonstrate compliance with the below:
Mold-Resistant Materials (Full Credit):
Demonstrate compliance with all of the following requirements:
- Install mold-resistant materials in all kitchens and bathrooms that meet one of the below specifications:
- are water-resistant and prevent mold, such as fiberglass-faced drywall, mold-resistant drywall tape, tile, ceramic, terrazzo, or stained concrete
- are rated "resistant" or "highly resistant" according to UL 2824
- meet the ASTM D 3273 standard.
- Install qualifying mold-resistant materials in all kitchens of dwelling units in all of the following areas:
- under sinks, including cabinetry when applicable
- behind sinks
- behind dishwashers
- floors.
- Install qualifying mold-resistant materials in all bathrooms of dwelling units in all of the following areas:
- under sinks, including cabinetry when applicable
- behind sinks
- on the walls around bathtubs extending to the ceiling
- on the walls around showers extending to the ceiling.
