Provide an optimal lighting environment
Rationale: A layered, flexible, and low-flicker artificial lighting setup that can adjust to individual occupant needs and day-to-day weather conditions reduces the risk of developing eye strain and migraines, and helps regulate circadian rhythm, which has strong positive effects on mood, sleep, and the immune system.
For the most accurate strategy and documentation requirements, please refer to the digital scorecard made available on the Fitwel Platform.
Requirements
Demonstrate compliance with the below:
Optimal Lighting Environment (Full Credit):
Demonstrate compliance with all of the following requirements:
- Ensure that 51% of lighting fixtures within all regularly occupied spaces within the building(s) are dimmable and/or tunable.
Qualifying regularly occupied spaces must include but are not limited to the following:
- Common spaces: which include spaces where building occupants gather for social events, such as resident lounges, common kitchen facilities, multipurpose rooms, and game rooms. Note that hallways, corridors, and elevator banks are not considered regularly occupied spaces.
- Common building amenities: which include resource centers, fitness facilities, and exercise rooms
- Ensure that the dimmable and/or tunable lighting fixtures can be operated by all building(s) occupants.
- Ensure that all luminaires within all regularly occupied areas of the building(s) under the control of building owner/manager reduce glare through one of the following:
- luminaires are classified with Unified Glare Rating (UGR) of 19 or lower.
- luminance does not exceed 6,000 cd/m2 at any angle between 45 and 90 degrees
- emit light above the horizontal plane
- Provide a minimum of one type of the following qualifying ambient lighting sources for general illumination throughout all regularly occupied areas within the building(s):
- ceiling-mounted
- recessed ceiling fixtures
- wall sconces
- floor lamps
- cove lighting
- Ensure that all luminaires and their controls lighting fixtures within all regularly occupied spaces within the building(s) are low flicker that meet one of the following:
- comply with Pst LM ≤ 1.0 and SVM ≤ 0.4 at full load
- are tested according to the requirements in Joint Appendix JA-10 and classified as “reduced flicker operation” by California Title 24
- align with IEEE Std 1789-2015 recommended practices 1, 2, or 3 and have a flicker of no less than 90Hz and a modulation percent ≤ 0.08*flicker
