Fitwel has two Certification Types (also known as Certification Pathways): Design and Built, which depend on the project stage of construction and occupancy status at the time of submission.
Design Certification (Prior to Occupancy)
The Design Certification demonstrates how a project intends to implement Fitwel strategies. Design Certification is available to new construction and major renovation projects once the design of the project is solidified. The project may be under construction or recently completed, but prior to being occupied.
EXAMPLES:
- In the design phase.
- Under construction.
- Undergoing renovations and is unoccupied.
Built Certification (Post Occupancy)
The Built Certification demonstrates how the project has already implemented Fitwel strategies. Built Certification is available to existing and/or recently completed projects that are occupied and in use. Areas that are not fully built, undergoing renovations, are not operational, and/or are not yet occupied should be excluded from the Built Certification.
EXAMPLES:
- Constructed, operational, and occupied.
- Completely renovated and now occupied.
- Constructed but temporarily unoccupied due to building closures related to an outbreak or pandemic, as specified by the national, regional, or local public health authority.

If I receive Design Certification does that mean I don't have to get Built Certification until recertification?
