Fitwel has two certification pathways: Design and Built. A project’s certification pathway depends on the project stage of the construction and occupancy status. Both certification pathways are valid for three years from the date certification is awarded. Projects that achieve certification with the Design Pathway may use the same scorecard version when recertifying with the Built Pathway (e.g., v2.1 may be applied to both pathways).
Design Certification (Prior to Occupancy)
Design Certification is available to new construction and major renovation projects once the design of the project is solidified. The project may be under construction or recently completed, but prior to being occupied. Design Certification demonstrates how a project intends to implement Fitwel strategies.
EXAMPLES:
- In design phase; construction has not started
- Undergoing renovations or under construction
- Undergoing partial renovations; parts of the project are occupied
Built Certification (Post Occupancy)
Built Certification is available to existing and/or recently completed projects that are occupied and in use. The Built Certification Pathway demonstrates how the project has implemented Fitwel strategies.
EXAMPLES:
- Constructed and occupied
- Completed renovation and now occupied
- Constructed but temporarily unoccupied due to building closures
